Solar panel installation in Mumbai, from survey to subsidy

Six services, one accountable team — residential rooftop systems, housing society solar, commercial installations, hybrid backup, subsidy paperwork and long-term maintenance.

Sizing guide

What each system size actually delivers in Mumbai

Indicative figures based on roughly 118 units per kW per month (annual average, monsoon-adjusted) and current PM Surya Ghar subsidy slabs. Your survey numbers will differ.

Residential on-grid system sizing — indicative, Mumbai
System size Units / month Shadow-free area Indicative cost PM Surya Ghar subsidy Suits a bill of
1 kW~118~85 sq ft₹65,000–75,000₹30,000₹1,200–1,800
2 kW~236~170 sq ft₹1,20,000–1,40,000₹60,000₹2,400–3,200
3 kW~354~255 sq ft₹1,80,000–2,10,000₹78,000₹3,500–5,000
5 kW~590~425 sq ft₹2,80,000–3,30,000₹78,000₹6,000–8,000
10 kW~1,180~850 sq ft₹5,20,000–6,20,000₹78,000₹12,000–16,000

The ₹78,000 central subsidy is capped at the 3 kW slab — a 10 kW residential system receives the same amount as a 3 kW one. Systems above 10 kW move out of residential net metering into net-billing or gross metering under the MERC framework.

Service 01

Residential rooftop solar in Mumbai

For bungalows, row houses and independent buildings with private roof rights. We size the system against your sanctioned load and your last six bills, not against how much roof you happen to have.

  • On-grid systems from 1 kW to 10 kW, ALMM-listed modules, BIS-certified inverter
  • Shadow study and structural feasibility before a price is issued
  • Complete PM Surya Ghar application, filed and followed up by us
  • Net meter coordination with Adani, Tata Power, BEST or MSEDCL
  • Generation monitoring app and first cleaning visit included

Typical timeline: 2–4 days of installation, 45–90 days from application to live net meter.

Best fit if…

  • Your monthly bill is above ₹2,500
  • You have 170+ sq ft of terrace that stays clear of shadow through midday
  • You own the roof, or hold written rights to it
  • Your sanctioned load supports the system size you want

Service 02

Housing society solar and group net metering

The fastest win for a Mumbai society is a common-area system. Lifts, water pumps, lobby lighting and the security cabin run all day on commercial-adjacent tariffs, so solar displaces the most expensive units first — and it needs no change to anyone's individual flat meter.

  • Committee presentation, shadow analysis and resolution draft prepared by us
  • Common-area system sized against the society's own consumption pattern
  • Group net metering to extend benefit to individual members
  • Elevated structures that keep the terrace usable for drying, water tanks and events
  • Staged execution so lift and pump supply is never interrupted

What the committee will ask

  • Who owns the asset? The society. It sits on the society's books.
  • What if we redo waterproofing? Ballast or bolted structures are removable and reinstallable.
  • Does it block the terrace? Elevated designs keep the floor usable.
  • What is the payback? Common-area systems typically run 4–6 years in Mumbai.

Service 03

Commercial and industrial solar

Shops, offices, clinics, warehouses and small manufacturing units on LT or HT commercial tariff. Commercial consumers pay more per unit than households and consume during daylight — the two conditions that make solar most valuable.

  • Load-profile study so generation is matched to daytime consumption, not exported at APPC
  • Accelerated depreciation benefit factored into the financial case
  • Metal sheet roof, RCC roof and shed-mounted structures
  • Net metering, net billing or behind-the-meter configurations per MERC rules
  • Optional OPEX / RESCO discussion where capital is better used elsewhere

Note: the PM Surya Ghar residential subsidy does not apply to commercial connections. The case here rests on tariff arbitrage and depreciation, and we will model both honestly.

Where the return comes from

  • Displacing units at commercial slab rates
  • Accelerated depreciation on the asset
  • Reduced exposure to future tariff increases
  • Demand-charge relief in some configurations

Service 04

Hybrid solar and battery backup

A hybrid inverter runs your home, charges a lithium battery for essential loads, and still exports surplus to the grid. It is the answer for homes that need power continuity, not just a lower bill.

  • Lithium (LFP) battery banks sized for essentials: lights, fans, fridge, router, medical equipment
  • Automatic changeover — no manual switching during an outage
  • Grid-connected export retained, so net metering benefits continue
  • Off-grid systems available for farmhouses and sites outside the grid

Be careful what you back up. Backing up air conditioners can triple battery cost. We size for essentials and tell you exactly what will and will not run when the grid drops.

Hybrid vs on-grid

  • Cost: 25–40% higher than on-grid
  • Payback: longer — you are buying reliability
  • Battery life: plan for replacement around year 8–12
  • Subsidy: applies to qualifying grid-connected capacity only

Service 05

Subsidy and net metering paperwork

This is where most rooftop solar projects in Mumbai stall. We run the entire file so you are not chasing a portal status page on a Sunday evening.

  • Registration and application on the PM Surya Ghar national portal
  • DISCOM technical feasibility application — Adani, Tata Power, BEST or MSEDCL
  • Sanctioned load verification and, where needed, load enhancement
  • Commissioning report submission and inspection coordination
  • Bidirectional meter follow-up until export starts registering
  • DBT subsidy claim and follow-through to credit

Why claims get rejected

  • Panels or inverter not on the ALMM / BIS list
  • System capacity exceeding sanctioned load
  • Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded for DBT
  • Installation started before feasibility approval
  • Applicant name not matching the electricity connection

We check all five before a single panel is ordered.

Service 06

Maintenance, cleaning and AMC

Solar has no moving parts, but Mumbai has dust, coastal salt and four months of monsoon grime. Unwashed panels quietly lose 8–15% of their generation, and most owners never notice because there is nothing to hear or see.

  • Scheduled cleaning cycles, adjusted around the monsoon
  • Inverter health checks, error log review and firmware updates
  • Connection torque checks, earthing continuity and SPD verification
  • Structure inspection for corrosion — critical near the coast
  • Plain-language quarterly generation report against the design estimate

We service systems we did not install, provided they pass a safety inspection first.

What underperformance looks like

  • Generation drifting below the design estimate month on month
  • One string consistently lower than the other
  • Inverter derating in the afternoon heat
  • Bill not falling as much as expected despite good generation — usually a metering issue, not a panel one
